About Modoc Outdoor Recreation & Tourism

Executive Summary

Established in November 2010, the Modoc Outdoor Recreation & Tourism (M.O.R.T.) Interagency Group is comprised of a unique group of dynamic and diverse individuals from various federal, state, local, Tribal, public and private agencies and organizations. M.O.R.T.’s primary function is to market and promote the frontier region of Modoc County as a premier outdoor recreation destination area, to educate and inform the public of the vast natural, historical and cultural resources available throughout the County and to engage youth in outdoor activities. 


Through this special partnership and community collaboration, it is the group’s expectation to develop a more efficient way for agencies, organizations and the public to communicate and work together. In consequence, create a more stable economy through outdoor recreation and tourism, to conserve and preserve the natural, historical and cultural resources in Modoc County, increase environmental awareness and understanding of public lands use, and engage youth and the public in outdoor activities thus promoting an overall healthy community and environment.


Our Mission:  


“To implement strategies and solutions that foster economic sustainability and vitality through outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities in Modoc County. This can be achieved through marketing and promotion, community collaboration, networking and outreach, therefore, ensuring the conservation and preservation of Modoc’s natural, historical and cultural resources.”


Goals and Objectives:

  1. To educate the public on the proper use/stewardship and enjoyment of public lands, its watershed and flora and fauna.

  2. To ensure the conservation and preservation of Modoc’s natural, historical and cultural resources.

  3. To emphasize and create community awareness of the habitat restoration and conservation projects achieved by the various federal, state, local, Tribal, public and private agencies and organizations.

  4. To market and promote Modoc County as a premier outdoor recreation destination area in northern California thereby improving the economic vitality of local businesses and the communities in general.

  5. To engage youth in outdoor activities by connecting children with Nature through outreach and environmental education programs, projects and other related events. 

  6. To endorse healthy lifestyle practices through outdoor recreation, thus creating a healthier and more vital community.

  7. To support our Regional partners.

  8.  To improve and support agency/community relations.


These goals and objectives can be achieved through interagency/community collaborative activities such as: Special events, environmental, conservation and habitat restoration projects, youth programs, public outreach and education and other related endeavors.
